Questions

General Questions

  • Wheel throwing is a pottery technique where a potter uses a spinning wheel to shape clay into functional or decorative pieces. As the wheel spins, the potter uses their hands and tools to form and refine the shape of the clay. This method requires a blend of technical skill and patience, offering a meditative and creative experience. It’s a wonderful way to engage with the ancient art of pottery and create unique, handcrafted items.

  • Tamborine Mountain’s rainforest climate means higher humidity, which can slow down the drying process compared to places like the Gold Coast. If a pot is still wet or retains moisture, it can explode in the kiln—not only damaging your pot but also the kiln and other students’ works. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so we make sure your pots are fully dry before firing.

Once your pots are out of the kiln, we’ll contact you using the details you provided to arrange their return for glazing or pick-up. Thanks for your patience!

  • Your pottery pieces will typically be ready for pickup or glazing within 4-6 weeks after your class. We will notify you via text message when your pots are ready. Please ensure you check your phone regularly for missed texts. If you need to glaze your pieces, you can choose a suitable day for this, and we’ll provide further details in our notification.

  • If you are unable to pick up your pottery pieces within the specified time, don’t worry! We hold onto your items for up to 1 month after they have been fired. If you need more time, please contact us, and we can discuss possible arrangements.

  • Yes, we can arrange to ship your pottery pieces to your home. This service will incur an additional fee to cover the cost of shipping and ensure your items are safely sent to you. Shipping will be organised as soon as payment has been made and we have your address. Please contact us to arrange shipping details.

  • After your pottery is shaped and dried, it goes through two stages of firing in our kiln:

    • Bisque Firing: The first firing hardens the clay and prepares it for glazing. This firing usually takes place at a lower temperature.

    • Glaze Firing: The second firing melts the glaze and creates a glass-like surface on your pottery. This firing occurs at a higher temperature and gives your pieces their final look and finish.

Each firing process takes several days, including cooling time, so please be patient as we ensure your pieces are perfectly prepared.

  • Please note that all classes at Clay Temple Co. are non-refundable. We understand that circumstances can change, but once a booking is made, it cannot be canceled or refunded. • While we take great care in the firing process and handling of your pottery, breakage can occasionally occur. Among the many One common cause of breakage is related to the amount of water used during the wheel throwing process. Excessive water or improper handling can sometimes weaken the clay, leading to cracks or breakage during firing. Additionally, factors such as thermal shock during the firing process or issues with drying can also contribute to breakage.

If your pottery breaks, please contact us with details about the incident, including how much water was used and any other relevant information. We’re here to help and will work with you to address the situation.

  • In the rare event that your pottery breaks or explodes during the first bisque firing, you are entitled to a replacement pot at no additional cost. We understand that accidents can happen during the firing process, and we want to ensure that you have a positive experience with us. If your pottery is damaged in this way, please contact us with the details, and we’ll arrange for a new piece to be made or offer a suitable alternative. Alternative Firing Options

We look forward to helping you explore the unique world of Obvara pottery!

  • Obvara pottery is an ancient and distinctive technique of pottery-making originating from Eastern Europe, specifically the region around Ukraine. It involves a unique process of dipping bisque-fired pottery into a mixture of flour, water, and yeast before firing it in a kiln. This technique creates a characteristic, unpredictable, and beautiful surface texture with a range of colors and patterns.

  • The process of making Obvara pottery typically involves the following steps:

    1. Create and Bisque-Fire: Shape your pottery using traditional methods, then bisque-fire it to a temperature where it is hard but still porous.

    2. Prepare Obvara Mixture: Mix flour, water, and yeast to create a thick, somewhat fermented slurry.

    3. Dip and Fire: Dip the bisque-fired pottery into the Obvara mixture, allowing it to coat the surface. Then, fire the piece in a kiln. The reaction between the glaze mixture and the high kiln temperatures creates the unique textures and patterns.

  • Obvara pottery is known for its distinctive and unpredictable surface effects, which include:

    • Unique Texture: The glaze mixture creates varied textures and surface patterns.

    • Rich Colors: The firing process can produce a range of colors, from earthy browns and oranges to deeper reds and blacks.

    • Natural Patterns: Each piece is unique, with patterns and textures that can vary widely, making every piece a one-of-a-kind creation.

  • Obvara pottery can be food-safe if properly glazed and fired. However, due to the unique nature of the Obvara technique and the materials used, it's important to ensure that your pieces are thoroughly tested and meet safety standards. Consult with your pottery instructor or studio for specific advice on food safety.

  • To care for Obvara pottery:

    • Cleaning: Hand wash your pieces with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads.

    • Storage: Store your pottery in a cool, dry place. Avoid exposing it to sudden temperature changes.

    • Use: While Obvara pottery is often functional, handle it with care due to the unique surface textures that may be more delicate than conventional glazes.

  • Yes, we offer workshops and classes on Obvara pottery. These classes provide hands-on experience with the Obvara technique, including creating, dipping, and firing your own pieces. For current class schedules and availability, please visit our [Classes page](insert link) or contact us at [insert contact email].
